It sounds so simple I just gotta go...

Oh, Mexico. (Thanks James Taylor)

I miss it. I want to go there and hang out on the beach and read piles of books and drink coconuts. I drove there with my mom when I was 19 and we just drove all over the place and had a bunch of fun. I kind of hated her during a lot of moments, because I was 19, but looking back now I thought it was one of the best experiences of my life. Life-changing, momentous, and wonderful. Glorious even.

The book/website The People's Guide to Mexico is a great resource for driving in Mexico, and it's great to even read as a book - his stories and tales are so interesting and funny. A true travel book that leads you to your own tequila-induced adventure, and not just a "guide" that tells you what hostels to stay at, where to eat, where to drink, where to shop, etc...

I mean, just look how pretty...

Somehow Duncan is not convinced about Mexico (whaaa???), but I think THESE could convince him:

(ok, the sea turtle is for me... they're just so beautiful and helpless and vulnerable)

If you're still no convinced, maybe some Mexico cycle chic is in order, from here and here

There's so many places to go! And just so much terrible television to watch... ah, life's dilemmas!

Wolf, Ocelot and the Lot

Holey Moley. These are some good looking animal portraits. I'm pretty partial to the wolf with the starry sky. I want that on a t-shirt. The ocelot ain't so bad either.

Joel Sartore, a National Geographic photographer (great job title) is behind all these lovelies. He had to get a federally permitted fly handler (strange job title) for the fly photo!  He's got a book out now called RARE: Portraits of America's Endangered Animals. I think I kind of want it.

Pretty Ocelot Eyes.

You kind of scare me, grizzly bear. Look how big your head is! (But you are still very cute). I just feel like you might always be around where I camp. Let's keep a safe distance, ok? I'll give you honey, in a bear shaped container for you.

St. Andrew Beach Mouse, you are pretty cute when you're sitting still, but apparently you don't do that much. Chill out. (P.S. Are your eyes all PUPIL or what?).

You look so pretty and old, Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbit. You were the last one in your genetic line, and that makes me a little sad even though I didn't know you existed until today, and now you don't even exist. I missed you.

A federally permitted fly handler had to catch you and knock you out with CO2 gas to get this photo, did you know that, Delhi Sands Flower-Loving Fly? But I think the karate kid could've got you with chop sticks, he's pretty good. Also, you don't need to call yourself Flower-Loving, everyone loves flowers! Or is that a hint?

You're kind of giving me the hairy eyeball, California Condor, but yet you're still kind of pretty fascinating. Oh wait a minute, you actually look like a scrotum.

And YOU, Mexican Gray Wolf! You look like a cosmic peyote god set against those stars. I think we could be friends, you and me.

LOVE those photos.  (All found here)

Also, did you know the amphibians are dying at an alarming rate?  (This has nothing to do with the guy we knew when we were kids that would swallow frogs live and then later on puke them back up LIVE. No joke. He did that for real. We dared him for the whole summer.)

Fresh to Death

My favourite March event is starting! That is my good friend Andrew's March Madness pool. I still have to finalize my picks, but I always get excited about March Madness for some reason. (Sometimes I don't even end up watching that much basketball). I hope Duncan and I have completely different picks so then maybe I can beat him at one more thing. I have a soft spot for Gonzaga and Wake Forest because I like their names. I always try to push them through farther than they should go. I'm such an irrational woman!

Also, Easter is coming up and today I was reminded of Pysanky eggs (by the lovely Betsey Hinze), which I had done a few times as a kid. You can't really screw these up, they always seem to look lovely (even when I did them as a dumb kid!). We'll be in Scotland for Easter so hopefully I can try one there! (Expect mine to look nothing like the ones below....)

Follow up to the Words

To follow up on the Words post awhile back, I'm going to go through and explain why each of those words remind me of Duncan.

Persnickety - well, I don't completely know what that one means, but he is finicky about a lot of things, and they sort of sound similar.

Pickle - Duncan and I like eating pickles together. Sometimes when he's not looking and we're out of pickles I will even take a little (ok, mammoth) sip of pickle juice that I keep in the fridge (I say I'm going to use it in potato salad). He's actually a little persnickety about his pickles actually, since there's only certain types he likes (ALL pickles are brilliant! He's crazy!)

Hodgepodge - ok, I guess I don't really understand where I got this one either. Somehow it makes me think of his beard a little though.

Stoop - at his old house on Maple Street near the beach, he had a front stoop and we both helped plant flowers and tomatoes on the porch, and we'd invite friends by for a "stoop party". We'd throw all our beer cans on the front lawn and clean them up in the morning. Now we live in an apartment where the douche below us complains about noise when my mom is over and we listen to Fleetwood Mac. I miss the stoop.

Raindrop - Duncan likes to get me when we're walking together by shaking a wet tree branch over my head, thereby dousing me with thousands of "raindrops". That's kind of a stretch, but the wet tree branch shaking is true.

Smidgen - why did i pick these words? Well, he's got a smidgen of ginger in his beard. That'll do.

Caliente - of course I think he is hot, but caliente has a much nicer ring to it. He also makes fun of the way I say "hot" when I wake up at night sweating and complaining if we don't have the window open.

Fallopian - oh jesus. One day I hope his sperm will get all up into my fallopian tubes and then that's how a baby's made? I should know this...

Tweed - my gorgeous Scottish man! I can't wait to see him in a kilt for his sister's wedding! I think he'll have a moustache too!

Silo - he grew up on Ballinroich farm in the Highlands, and they have silos there. Him and his sisters used to play in them when they were filled with grain.

Parisian - this also makes not much sense (I think I just liked the photo)...
...but he loves Paris and France in general and I can't wait to go there one day with him. I'd love to go live in the French countryside like David Sedaris and then "me talk pretty one day"

Luminous - he is quite brilliant, but also the moon is just so romantic. Luminous, you're done.

Gorilla - the other week I was listening to This American Life and they did a show where one of the stories was about a couple raising a chimpanzee in their home(!) and it got to the point where it would make itself gin and tonics and like, touch itself and things, it was so integrated into "being" a human. Eventually they had to send it away to a small island in Africa where it had to be taught how to live in the wild, ending with it being killed by poachers. I was thinking about that story a lot, and I guess I thought it was gorilla. There is no connection to Duncan here, except I tried to get him to listen to the story, but he fell asleep.

Gringo - so I don't know where this came from either. He says he has no desire to go to Mexico, but I'll get him there one day!

Schlep - Larry David says, and I agree, that skiing is such a "schlep". I'm making a conscious effort to use that word more as an excuse for not doing stuff. Duncan tries to get me to do stuff.

Moustache - this one is easy! he sometimes has a moustache (or a beard). It looks very handsome either way! I'm a big fan of facial hair. Here's a photo when his moustache was probably as long as it got.

Turbine - I think I was actually thinking combine, since he grew up on a farm. But actually, his parents are renovating an old water mill this year, and that uses a turbine I believe (water mills?), so turbine makes sense.

Harvest - I picture him sitting in tall grass with a strand (strand?) of wheat in his teeth, and the sun low and warm and hitting his cheeks. Playing with trucks or something as a kid, near the harvest time.

Barley - or maybe it was a strand of barley in his teeth...

Stone - he is very stubborn, and firm, and sturdy. His morals are rock solid, and I would trust him with my life. Stone seems very steady and reliable.

Vinyl - I love having records, even though I don't listen to them nearly enough. Duncan was quite excited to see all my records the first time, saying it added to my "street cred". I loved watching him listen to OK Computer on vinyl. (He yelled out once at a concert "I love you Radiohead" just as everything went silent... dork.)

So... That. Is. That! Boom goes the dynamite!

Picnics on Bikes

Since our very first date was a picnic (of sorts) on our bikes, I created a treasury in Etsy for a perfect picnic with my beau...

Why are picnics so nice and romantic?

Our First Date (Remembered)

One of our first dates together was in February (2009) but it was so nice out that we planned to ride our bikes on the seawall. So I gathered up some goodies in my basket and made him a card (decorated with a construction paper cut out bicycle), and off we went on our very first real date!

It was chilly, but we cuddled under a blanket on these bench/chairs near the Athlete's Village and sipped our drinks and looked at the city.

+
I remember thinking that he just seemed so nice and genuine and sweet... and I was right! He is all those things! That was such a perfect beginning for us...

Bargaining Tools

I don't know what sort of mood I was in last night, but I just felt like watching a stupid movie, and The Ugly Truth was on. I don't know why I wanted to watch it, but I did, and Duncan being a perfectly reasonable intelligent man, did not want to watch this pile of garbage. I somehow persuaded him to watch this with me, THAT IS HOW NICE HE IS! And I hated it. I will never get that Wednesday evening back. EVER.

Jersey Shore

I don't even consider it a "guilty" pleasure. It's just pleasure... pure pleasure. I not only love the show, but I love all the commentary on it. We listened to a podcast with a sports announcer Duncan follows, called the B.S. Report with Bill Simmons. So we listened to two sports guys talk about Jersey Shore and how much they loved it, and making comparisons between J-Woww's having a boyfriend and Darryl Strawberry's cocaine problem. "They were good, but without those things, they would have been great."

Can't wait for the second season, although I'm sure it will be a little disappointing and more than a little contrived. Oh well. It was one of the few things Duncan wouldn't mind watching on the laptop in bed, and that suits me just fine. Now! Off to GTL (I do NONE of those things - gym, tan, laundry)
